Infant Oral Care: Before and After the First Tooth

Parents in Apollo Beach often ask when to start caring for their baby's mouth. The answer is earlier than most expect — good oral care begins before the very first tooth appears.

Before the First Tooth

Even before teeth emerge, bacteria can build up in your baby's mouth. After each feeding, gently wipe your baby's gums with a soft, damp cloth or gauze pad. This removes milk residue and bacteria that can affect early tooth development. It also helps your baby get used to having their mouth cleaned, which makes the transition to brushing easier when the first tooth arrives.

To prevent harmful exposure, avoid letting milk or juice sit in your baby's mouth for extended periods. Never put your baby to bed with a bottle of milk, formula, or juice.

After the First Tooth Appears

Once the first tooth erupts, it is time to start brushing. Use a soft baby toothbrush with a tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste — about the size of a grain of rice. Brush gently twice a day, making sure to cover all surfaces of the tooth and the gumline. As more teeth come in, continue brushing each one carefully.

Why Early Care Matters

Baby teeth play a bigger role than many parents realize. They are essential for:

- Eating — helping your child chew a variety of healthy foods as they grow

  • Speech development — proper tooth placement supports clear sound formation
  • Guiding adult teeth — baby teeth hold the correct space in the jaw for permanent teeth to come in properly

When baby teeth decay or are lost too early, it can cause alignment issues and crowding for the permanent teeth that follow.

When to Schedule the First Dental Visit

The American Dental Association recommends scheduling your child's first dental visit by their first birthday or when the first tooth appears — whichever comes first. Starting dental visits early helps your baby become comfortable with the dental environment and allows your dentist to identify any early concerns.
